A Prescott woman was charged late last month in Pierce County Circuit Court with police battery.

Jamie L. Whelan, 23, 715 Shane Park Cir., Apt. 8, stands alleged of the Class H felony, which carries a maximum penalty of $10,000 and/or six years prison if found guilty. Her next court appearance is a Monday, Jan. 25, at 1:30 p.m. preliminary hearing.

According to the criminal complaint, Prescott Officer Kari Bastien stopped a vehicle around 2:36 a.m. Dec. 27 for appearing to go faster than the posted speed limit on Hwy. 10 at Hilton Street, along with having a loud exhaust.

Bastien noted in her report she finally caught up with the vehicle at Campbell Street and eventually the car pulled over on Dexter Street. Bastien asked the driver why she was pulled over and she replied she wasn’t sure. She later stated she was aware of the exhaust.

Bastien asked her where she was coming from and she replied “Cottage Grove.” Bastien later said she smelled alcohol and the woman responded “I’m sure you do.” After handing Bastien her wallet, the driver was starting to put the keys in the ignition, which Bastien had asked for. The driver responded with a profanity.

Bastien then noted she was able to get the driver out of the car, but she resisted. She was able to get handcuffs on the driver, but she then spun around and kicked Bastien in the leg and fell to the ground.
