Al Huppert started working right after he graduated from high school.

Fifty-plus years later, he’s ready for the second part of his life to begin, as he retired Friday. He spent the last 18 years as maintenance supervisor for Pierce County.

“When you read the obituaries and everyone is younger than you, it’s time to quit,” the 70-year-old said as friends, family and fellow county workers came by to offer their congratulations during a party in the county board room.

An Ellsworth native, Huppert was in the construction business for nearly 30 years before coming to Pierce County as its maintenance supervisor.

“I’ve had pretty great people to work with,” he said.
