HARTFORD - The Connecticut Sun have traded point guard Lindsay Whalen and the second overall pick in the 2010 WNBA draft to Minnesota in exchange for guard Renee Montgomery and the No. 1 pick in 2010.
Montgomery averaged 9.0 points and 2.1 assists over 34 games last season, her first in the league.
"By trading Lindsay and second draft pick to Minnesota, we are able to acquire a young point guard in Renee Montgomery who, in time, can become one of the best guards in our league, as well as acquiring the first pick in this year's college draft," said Sun head coach Mike Thibault.
Whalen has spent her entire six-year career with Connecticut and in 197 games she averaged 11.6 points, 4.9 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game. Her 964 assists are the most in Sun history.
Whalen is originally from Hutchinson, Minnesota and helped to turn around a then troubled and losing University of Minnesota women's basketball program by leading them to the Final Four in 2004.
