Sioux, Gophers skate to 3-3 tie
North Dakota and Minnesota skated to a 3-3 tie at Mariucci Arena Friday evening.
MINNEAPOLIS - UND freshman forward and Twin Cities native Danny Kristo scored twice and had chances for a hat trick during a 3-3 tie against rival Minnesota.
The Sioux (12-6-5, 8-6-3 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) also extended their unbeaten streak to five games — tying a season best — while making it six straight at Mariucci Arena without a loss.
UND gave up a late lead when Bowling Green transfer Jacob Cepis found a loose puck in the slot and beat Sioux goalie Brad Eidsness (24 saves) with just 2 minutes, 4 seconds remaining.
Brad Malone, who put the Sioux ahead 3-2 with 13:23 left in the third period, called the game bittersweet.
Minnesota, which received goals from Jordan Schroeder and Patrick White, continued its strong play as of late. The Gophers are 6-1-1 in their last eight games after starting the season 5-9-1.
After falling behind 3-2, the Gophers put heavy pressure on the Sioux. Eidsness made several key stops until the Gophers gained the zone with a puck fluttering at head-level near Sioux defensemen Andrew MacWilliam and Ben Blood.
