STEVENS POINT - The WIAA Board of Control will decide today whether to revamp Wisconsin’s high school football structure. The board meets in Stevens Point, and is scheduled to act on a plan to do away with conferences for football.
Yesterday, the WIAA’s Advisory Council voted 17-to-nothing against the change. The council is made up of high school administrators.
All schools would be placed into districts of eight teams based on their locations and enrollments. The move would take effect this fall. It’s designed to reduce scheduling problems for some schools – and to get rid of a crunch in which playoff teams have three games in 10 days in late October and early November. But critics say the WIAA should look for less drastic ways to deal with those concerns. Earlier, the Sports Advisory Committee voted 11-to-2 against the plan. But the football coaches’ advisory panel endorsed it on a 6-1 vote.
