MINNEAPOLIS - Blake Hoffarber scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Minnesota Golden Gophers to a 65-61 win over the Northwestern Wildcats in a Big Ten Conference bout at Williams Arena.
Hoffarber converted 5-of-8 shots behind the three-point line for the Golden Gophers (13-7, 4-4 Big Ten) as they snapped a three-game slide. Lawrence Westbrook accounted for 18 points and six assists in the win as well.
The Wildcats (14-6, 3-5) were paced by John Shurna who tallied 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the team's second loss in three games. Michael Thompson chipped in 15 points and six assists and Drew Crawford 11 points, while Luka Mirkovic accounted for a game-high 14 boards.
Northwestern shot only 40 percent from the field in the first half and failed to make a single trip to the free-throw line, leaving the squad with a 33-25 deficit at the break.
In the second half Minnesota made good on an impressive 57.9 percent from the floor, including 5-of-9 behind the three-point line, but it was free-throw shooting down the stretch that locked up the four-point win for the home team.
