The WIAA announced a plan yesterday to have five divisions instead of four in both boys-and-girls’ basketball.
It’s been talked about for some time, but the details are just now coming out. Instead of being divided equally each year, the schools would be placed into fixed enrollment groups.
Division-One schools would have 1,200 students or more. Division-Two would have 600 to 1,199 kids. Division-Three would have the top half of those schools with enrollments of 200-to-599, and Division-Four would make up the bottom half. The new Division-Five would have schools with 200 students or fewer.
The goal is to have the largest schools in a division no more than twice as large as the smallest. The first WIAA panel to take it up will be the Basketball Advisory Committee on March 31st. The Board of Control will consider it June 24th. If approved, the change would take effect this fall.
