A Hudson man made an initial appearance in a packed St. Croix County Circuit Court Monday afternoon on a felony charge related to the alleged mistreatment of his dog that led to the animal’s death.

Michael J. Wondra, 25, appeared before Judge Howard W. Cameron who continued a $2,000 cash bail and set a preliminary hearing for Feb. 24. Judge Cameron also ordered Wondra not to possess any pets.

An estimated 30 people filled the courtroom on behalf of the abused animal. About half of them were members of St. Croix Animal Friends. Calls and letters from people concerned with the abuse of the animal have been flooding the offices of the district attorney and sheriff since the incident was reported.

Wondra was arrested and booked into jail on Jan. 1.
