Westbrook's buzzer-beater lifts U over Penn State
Minnesota Sports- Minnesota guard Lawrence Westbrook nailed a buzzer beater to give his team the 66-64 road win at Penn State.
State College, PA, United States (AHN) - The Minnesota Golden Gophers received a scare from the Penn State Nittany Lions in Happy Valley, but Minnesota guard Lawrence Westbrook nailed a buzzer beater to give his team the 66-64 road win.
Westbrook's last-second dramatics gave him 12 points on the game.
Minnesota led for virtually the entire contest, but the Golden Gophers were unable to push their lead to double digits at any time during the game.
Penn State managed to stay within striking distance and finally pulled even on a somewhat chaotic play.
Penn State guard Talor Battle, who hit a 3-pointer with 37 seconds to play to shrink Minnesota's lead to 64-62, drove the lane looking for the equalizer.
His layup attempt was blocked by Minnesota forward Ralph Sampson III.
However, the ball went right to Penn State forward Jeff Brooks, who passed the ball back to Battle for the game-tying layup with nine seconds to play.
Minnesota chose not to use a timeout, which set the stage for Westbrook's heroics.
