MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Brewers signed veteran reliever Scott Schoeneweis to a minor league contract yesterday, with a chance to make the Brewers at spring training.

The left-hander reliever was signed to provide insurance in case something happens to southpaw Mitch Stetter. General manager Doug Melvin says the 36-year-old Schoeneweis has traditionally been strong against left-handed batters, who have only hit .227 off him. He’s an 11-year Major League veteran. Last season, he went 1-and-2 at Arizona with a seven-point-one-three ERA, while dealing with the death of his wife Gabriele last May. Schoeneweis was placed on the disabled list last August to help him deal with depression, plus parenting for his four children. Now, Brewers’ pitching coach Rick Peterson says Schoeneweis is ready to return. The two were with the New York Mets together in 2007-and-’08.

If he makes the roster, Schoeneweis will get $800,000 this year. The Brewers also signed a minor league deal with left-handed starter Chase Wright, who went 9-7 at Triple-“A” Nashville last year.
