This is regionals weekend across the state of Wisconsin for prep wrestling and all three Pierce County prep teams will be in action.
Ellsworth and Prescott will be at West Salem for the Division 2 West Salem-Bangor Regional. Along with them will be Black River Falls, West Salem-Bangor, Mondovi, Durand and Melrose-Mindoro/Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau. The meet begins at 11 a.m.
Spring Valley-Elmwood will be at Clear Lake for the Division 3 Clear Lake Regional. With the Redbirds are No. 3 ranked Boyceville, No. 8 Glenwood City, No. 8 Clear Lake, Shell Lake, Turtle Lake-Clayton and St. Croix Central. Many feel this is the toughest regional in the state in Division 3. Action gets underway at 10:30 a.m.
The first place teams will compete in team sectionals next Tuesday. In Division 2 the meet is at Amery and in Division 3 the meet is at Ladysmith, both starting at 6 p.m.
Some of the top wrestlers outside Pierce County at the D-2 regional meet are Durand's Travis Robelia at 125 and Andrew Hartmann at 135 pounds; Mondovi's Cody Fedie at 103 and Dakota Yarrington at 215; Black River Falls' Joey Reidel at 145; Zach Raifsneider at 130 and Roger Stahl at 103 and Mel-Min/G-E-T's Eric Low at 125; Jake Kabula at 171, Jorey Dobbs at 189 and Layne Benton at 285.
The host West Salem-Bangor has one of its best teams in years with five wrestlers from 119-140 pounds with 20 wins or more along with 27-8 Frank Warren at 171. This regional looks to be the deepest among all the schools competing in several years.
Only the top two wrestlers will advance to next weekend's individual sectionals. In Division 2 that's at Somerset and in Division 3 the meet again is at Osseo-Fairchild High School hosted by Independence-Gilmanton.
Besides all the top-notch Dunn-St. Croix wrestlers, the Clear Lake Regional will have plenty of good Lakeland Conference wrestlers as well.
Clear Lake won the Lakeland Coneference meet again and had conference champions like Tim Anderson at 103, Brayden Wienke at 152, Jake Leintz at 215. Leintz's brother Nick finished second at 285 as did several other Warrior wrestlers.
Shell Lake finished third in the Lakeland meet but won the West Lakeland dual meet title again (Clear Lake won the East Lakeland division in duals). The Lakers' Tyler Anderson won the 140-pound conference title at the meet last weekend and Turtle Lake-Clayton also had a champion in the same meet in Hunter Cardinal at 145.
