VANCOUVER - Wisconsinites will have plenty to root for when the Winter Olympics begin tonight in Vancouver. Thirty athletes with ties to the Badger State will try to win team-or-individual gold medals.
Over 60,000 people are expected to attend the Olympics’ first indoor opening ceremony this evening. Competition begins tomorrow, and the first Wisconsin athletes will hit the ice on Sunday when the U.S. women’s hockey team takes on China. Wisconsin Badger coach Mark Johnson will try to lead the Americans to their first gold medal since 1998 – and he’ll have seven present or former Badgers at his disposal. And four men’s hockey players from Wisconsin will try to give the U-S its first gold since the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” team which Johnson played on.
Seven American speed-skaters hail from the state, and six more train at the Pettit National Ice Center near Milwaukee – including gold medal favorite Shani Davis. The U.S. women’s curling team also has three members from Wisconsin. And Debbie McCormick of Rio is the team’s captain.
