State D-I hoops round-up: UWGB gets win, UWM slide continues
Wisconsin Sports- UW-Green Bay men's hoops team won in Detroit in Horizon League play while UW-Milwaukee's late season swoon continues.
The UW-Green Bay men’s basketball team won at Detroit last night, 64-to-62. The Phoenix went in front for good with 2:11 to play when Seth Evans stole the ball from Detroit’s Woody Payne, and Rahmon Fletcher made a fast-break lay-up. Green Bay was up by four in the final minute when Eli Holman hit a lay-up to get the Titans to within two – and that’s how the game ended. Fletcher had 16 points for UWGB, which remains in third place in the Horizon League at 8-6. Chase Simon and Thomas Kennedy each had 15 points for Detroit, which fell to 7-7 in the conference and 15-11 overall. Green Bay is 16-10 overall, and will play at Wright State tomorrow.
The UW-Milwaukee men have dropped four-of-their-last-five, after losing at Wright State last night 68-63. The Panthers fought back from a pair of nine-point deficits, but they could not prevail after tying the game at 61 with three minutes to play. Milwaukee got to within two with 30 seconds left, but they could not make another play as the Raiders made three-of-four free throws to seal their victory. James Eayrs scored 20 points for UWM, which is now one-and-a-half games away from a chance to host a home game in the upcoming Horizon League tournament. Panthers’ guard Ricky Franklin hurt a wrist in the first half, but he returned later. Cory Cooperwood scored 16 for Wright State, which improved 9-and-5 in the conference and 16-9 overall. The Panthers fell to 5-8 in the league and 13-12 overall. Milwaukee will play at Detroit tomorrow.
