DENVER - Denver took Game 1 of this weekend series with Minnesota Friday 3-1 at Magness Ice Arena.
The Gophers started the third period of the scoreless game with their defensive corps in control of the first minute until Tyler Ruegsegger scored the opening goal (his fourteenth) for Denver on even strength at 0:55. John Lee and Marc Cheverie (yes, the goalkeeper) got both assists on the play. Denver would start the period as the stronger team in the first three minutes and the goal helped change momentum. Joe Colborne would add his thirteenth goal of the season with the second goal of the game on even strength at 11:37 and Tyler Ruegsegger as well as Rhett Rakhshani assisted Colborne on the jam-in goal.
Patrick White with help from Mike Carman and Cade Fairchild at 18:22 cut the deficit to 2-1 by scoring his eighth of 2009-10. But in the blink of an eye, the Gophers got sloppy when a goal was allowed in Kangas’ legs when Rhett Rakhshani scored his eighteenth goal of the season (unassisted) making it 3-1 at 18:39, and that proved to be decisive.
Twenty-four saves for Alex Kangas would be a dandy effort on any other night, but tonight, the offense just wasn’t there both on even strength and advantages.
