LA CROSSE - A search continues today on the Mississippi River in La Crosse for Craig Meyers – the technical college student who’s been missing since early Sunday.
A bloodhound tracked the scent of the 21-year-old Meyers yesterday, and rescue divers lowered cameras through holes on the ice. But the channel was too hazardous to enter the water. Officials said the ice is six-inches thick in some spots, and thin and crumbled in others, and they must consider the safety of the divers in proceeding. Meanwhile, volunteers and others conducted a land search for Meyers – who was last seen after he was dropped off at a place he mistakenly thought was his girlfriend’s house. It was near a motel where police found that someone had tumbled down a snowy river bank, and a single set of foot-prints went onto the river’s ice.
Meyers was at a wedding reception and two downtown taverns the night he vanished. He was a state champion wrestler who studied criminal justice at Western Technical College. La Crosse has had a River Watch partnership since 2006, after an eighth college-age man drowned in the river after a night of drinking. Those deaths occurred over the course of a decade.
