PHOENIX - Milwaukee Brewers’ manager Ken Macha says he’ll make sure that all 32 pitchers get a chance to show their stuff at spring training. The team has brought in an abundance of bodies to try and find a better combination, after having the National League’s worst team ERA in 2009.
The Brewers used 23 total pitchers and nine starters last season because of injuries and other problems. And because of that, Macha is telling all his pitchers to impress everyone they can, regardless of where they start this season. Macha says he’ll spread the workload throughout the “A” games, “B” games, and split-squad contests during the exhibition season, so everybody gets a fair audition.
Yesterday was supposed to be the first formal workout for pitchers and catchers. But rain cut into the proceedings in Phoenix, and the pitchers’ fielding practice and fundamental drills were scrapped.
