There were no major upsets last night in the first round of the boys’ state high school basketball regionals.
All four defending champions from a year ago advanced to the next round. Division-Three champ Racine Saint Catherine’s and D-Four titlist Benton won their openers, while the other two champs – Wisconsin Lutheran and Madison Memorial – had the night off.
All 56 top seeds advanced to the next round, and 21 of them had byes. The AP number-one teams advanced in all four divisions. De Pere had a bye, while Waukesha Catholic Memorial, Marathon, and Randolph all scored victories.
South Shore, a top-seed in Division-Four, had the most lopsided game of the night. South Shore crushed Lac Courte Oreilles 102-15.
The regionals continue Saturday night in Division-One, and tomorrow night in the other three divisions.
