PHOENIX - Jeff Suppan will get the start this afternoon as the Milwaukee Brewers open their Cactus League exhibition season against San Francisco in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Barry Zito will start for the Giants. Brewers’ shortstop Alcides Escobar will miss the game while undergoing the first in a series of dental procedures.
Yesterday, the Blue team beat the White squad 2-to-1 as the Brewers played a five-inning intra-squad contest. The projected starters wore the white uniforms. Prince Fielder homered off Chuck Lofgren. Manny Parra and Dave Bush each threw two scoreless innings. Milwaukee’s top draft choice from last year, right-hander Eric Arnett, walked his first four batters before getting two batters out.
Manager Ken Macha said he was especially impressed with veteran outfielder Jim Edmonds and his patience at the plate. The 39-year-old Edmonds walked and flew out to left, after missing all of last season.
