Fielder hit in back in Brewers first exhibition game
Wisconsin Sports-- Milwaukee Brewers’ first baseman Prince Fielder was hit in the back by the first pitch thrown to him in yesterday’s exhibition opener.
PHOENIX - Milwaukee Brewers’ first baseman Prince Fielder was hit in the back by the first pitch thrown to him in yesterday’s exhibition opener.
San Francisco starter Barry Zito apparently did it in retaliation for what the Brewers did last September in a home game against the Giants. Fielder hit a walk-off homer in the 12th inning – and his teammates fell down like bowling pins as Fielder jumped on home plate. Zito said he wanted to throw hard to Fielder, but it’s not like they planned for months to hit him.
Fielder said last fall’s celebration was worth it, even after he got hit yesterday.
Brewers’ starter Jeff Suppan did not retaliate – and apparently, the disagreement was over. The Brewers lost the game 5-3. John Axford gave up four runs on five hits in the fifth inning to take the loss. Rickie Weeks hit a pair of RBI singles for Milwaukee. Weeks said his surgically-repaired wrist was fine after he checked a swing.
The Brewers will play Oakland this afternoon. Right-hander Yovani Gallardo will start against ex-Brewer Ben Sheets. Yesterday, the Brewers renewed Gallardo’s contract for $450,000. He was the last remaining Brewer to be signed
