Altoona edges Ellsworth in closesly contested regional hoops game

A 4-5 seed game in any eight-team tournament should be an even contest and the Ellsworth-Altoona WIAA Division 2 Spring Valley Regional Tournament first-round game was exactly that.

ALTOONA - A 4-5 seed game in any eight-team tournament should be an even contest and the Ellsworth-Altoona WIAA Division 2 Spring Valley Regional Tournament first-round game was exactly that.

In a game that was tied at halftime and heading into the fourth quarter, Altoona was able to outlast the Panthers 53-49.

The Railroaders were held to just 14 field goals, seven in each half, by the Panthers' defense. But Altoona gained their edge at the free-throw line, making 23-of 34. Ellsworth only took 15 free-throws and made nine of them.

EHS only had one player in double figures, Shannon Campbell with 14 points. Kelly Kannel finished with eight points and three players had six points. Altoona was led by 17 points Rachel Larson and 11 points from Ariel Gillespie.
