EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - The Vikings addressed a concern at cornerback by signing Benny Sapp to a contract extension. Sapp became a restricted free agent last week and talked with several teams before deciding to stay with the Vikings.
Last season, Sapp put in plenty of playing time when All-Pro cornerback Antoine Winfield went down with a foot injury. He finished with seven pass breakups and two forced fumbles as well as a career-high 55 tackles. The Vikings need stability in the defensive backfield after Cedric Griffin had surgery to repair a torn ACL, an injury that happened in the NFC championship game loss at New Orleans.
Former Pro Bowl running back LaDainian Tomlinson is reportedly planning a visit to Vikings headquarters Thursday. The 31-year old Tomlinson, who's number-eight on the all-time leading rushing list, was let go by the Chargers recently. The Vikings are said to be looking at the 2006 MVP as Adrian Peterson's back-up, replacing Chester Taylor who left for Chicago.
