Marquette advances in Big East tournament

NEW YORK - Marquette will face Villanova this afternoon in the quarter-finals of the Big East men’s basketball tournament.
The 10th-ranked Wildcats will play their first game at Madison Square Garden, after earning a double-bye. Marquette enjoyed a first-round bye before it squeaked past Saint John’s 57-to-55 yesterday.
The Golden Eagles led by as many as 14 points in the first half. But the Red Storm battled back and took a one-point lead with 2:22 left. Marquette went in front for good with 1:11 to go, when David Cubillan hit a three-pointer. And the Eagles hung on despite missing its final three shots from the free-throw line.
Lazar Hayward led Marquette with 20 points and nine rebounds. D-J Kennedy and Sean Evans each had 12 for Saint John’s, which dropped its 11th straight game to the Eagles and ended its season at 17-and-15.
Fifth-seeded Marquette improved to 21-and-10. Today, they’ll face a fourth-seeded Villanova squad that beat the Eagles twice in the regular season by a total of four points. The tip-off is scheduled for 1:25.
