WCHA playoffs begin tonight, Anchorage at UW, Gophers at UND

The postseason for men's college hockey begins tonight with first round games in the WCHA. The first round of the women's NCAA tournament also begins this weekend.

The Wisconsin men’s hockey team will open its WCHA playoff run tonight at home against Alaska-Anchorage. It’s a best-of-three series that will be played nightly throughout the weekend until it’s settled.

The Badgers finished second in the conference with 37 points. That’s the best finish in coach Mike Eaves’ eight years in Madison. Wisconsin is also ranked third in the nation, with an overall mark of 22-9-4. Alaska-Anchorage comes in at 11-21-2, and the Seawolves have only won two of their last 10 games. The Badgers beat them twice in November, 5-1 and 6-2.

Whoever wins the series advances to the WCHA Final Five next week in Saint Paul.

Seventh-ranked St. Cloud State is hosting Minnesota State-Mankato in their WCHA first round game. Also tonight, 14th-ranked Minnesota-Duluth is home against Colorado College at the DECC, while the University of Minnesota plays at North Dakota.

College Hockey America's final postseason tournament starts today with number eight Bemidji State playing at Niagara. CHA disbands after this season and Bemidji State joins the WCHA men's league.

The women's college hockey national tournament quarterfinals are tomorrow with Minnesota hosting Clarkson and UMD at home against New Hampshire. The women's Frozen Four is later this month at Ridder Arena.
