LA CROSSE - Wildlife officials want your help in naming nine new islands on the Mississippi River a few miles south of La Crosse.
The U.S. Fish-and-Wildlife Service started building the islands four years ago as part of a wildlife habitat re-construction project. It will take about two more years to finish the islands, which are located in a three-thousand-acre back-water between Stoddard in Vernon County and Brownsville, Minnesota.
Officials are looking for names that reflect the area’s history, geology, fish, and wildlife. The winners will get certificates. Entries can be mailed by April ninth to the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge Island Naming Contest at 555 Lester Avenue in Onalaska.
