Clayton loses close contest to NEW Lutheran at state tourney

NEW Lutheran advanced this afternoon with a 64-to-63 victory over Clayton in a D-Four semi-final.That was after Randolph easily won the day’s first semi-final over Royall, 63-to-35.

NEW Lutheran advanced this afternoon with a 64-to-63 victory over Clayton in a D-Four semi-final.That was after Randolph easily won the day’s first semi-final over Royall, 63-to-35.

NEW Lutheran took a 13-point lead after the first quarter, and was still up by double-digits in the third period before Clayton came back. Ethan Derricks sealed the victory for the Blazers by making two free-throws with six-point-four seconds left. Clayton hit a three-pointer at the buzzer. But it wasn’t enough, as the Bears ended their season at 25-and-2. Taylor Dayton scored a game-high 26 points for Clayton. Kaylor Zimmerman led the Blazers with 21. Green Bay NEW Lutheran improved to 18-10.

They’ll now play an undefeated Randolph team that’s going for a state-record eighth championship.

This afternoon, the Division-One quarter-finals are getting underway. Unbeaten Antigo plays Appleton East. And defending champion Madison Memorial takes on Neenah. Tonight, Milwaukee Hamilton plays Milwaukee Marquette. And Verona closes out the evening against Hartland Arrowhead.
