SAN JOSE - Marquette’s season is over after the Golden Eagles were upset by Washington last night in the first round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
Quincy Pondexter made a driving lay-up with 1.7 seconds left to give the 11th-seeded Huskies an 80-78 victory over the number-six Eagles in an East Regional contest in San Jose.
Marquette opened the second half with a 17-2 run, but Washington roared back with a 20-6 run – and the game stayed close for the final eight minutes. The Eagles shot 53-percent, but Washington shot 55-percent.
Isaiah Thomas scored 19 points for the Huskies, who improved to 25-9 and will play New Mexico in the second round tomorrow. Darius Johnson-Odom scored 19 for Marquette, which closes out at 22-12.
The Eagles were among three Big East teams which were upset in Day-One of the tournament. Sixth-seeded Notre Dame fell to Old Dominion. And the day’s biggest upset happened when number-three Georgetown fell to 14th-seeded Ohio, 97-83.
