Northwestern, Regis, Arrowhead in first title games
Maple Northwestern’s Steve Tecker and Dominic Hissa were double trouble for Kiel Friday afternoon as they combined to lead the Tigers to their first-ever WIAA State Boys Basketball Tournament title game.
MADISON — Maple Northwestern’s Steve Tecker and Dominic Hissa were double trouble for Kiel Friday afternoon.
The seniors combined for 53 points, 17 rebounds and nine assists as the ninth-ranked Tigers fought past Kiel 76-71 in a WIAA Division 2 state semifinal boys basketball game at the Kohl Center.
It was the first state tournament win in three tries for the Tigers (24-4), who play No. 1 ranked Waukesha Catholic Memorial (26-2) in today’s state championship game at 6:35 p.m.
Tecker, who will play for Division I South Dakota next year, played for
27 minutes — the most since his return from hip surgery that forced him to miss the entire regular season and the start of the postseason. He was 7-for-10 from the floor and 13-for-19 from the line, finishing with
27 points, five rebounds and five assists off the bench.
Hissa, the Notre Dame baseball recruit, added 26 points, 12 rebounds and four assists.
Kiel (19-7) kept the game close behind guards Joey Burris, Brandon Gries and D.J. Driscoll. Burris led the Raiders with 21 points. Brandon Gries added 19 points despite missing part of the second half with a sprained left ankle. Driscoll had 15 on 6-for-7 shooting.
Also playing in their first-ever state title games Saturday will be Green Bay NEW Lutheran in Division 4, Eau Claire Regis in Division 3 and Hartland Arrowhead in Division 1.
Regis will play defending champion Racine Saint Catherine’s for the Division-Three boys’ state high school basketball title. The Ramblers advanced with a 52-42 win over Brillion this afternoon in the day’s second D-Three semi-final in Madison. The game was tied at 19 at the half, but Regis opened things up in the final 16 minutes. The result left both teams at 23-5. Racine Saint Catherine’s won the other Division-Three semi-final this morning 64-49 over Blair-Taylor.
In Division 1, Madison Memorial had no trouble beating Appleton East 68-48 while Hartland Arrowhead survived a furious rally from Milwaukee Marquette and won 60-58 on a last-second shot by Charles Rushman.
