MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota football team begins spring practice today, and coach Tim Brewster says three-year starter Adam Weber of Mounds View has to beat out two others to keep his job.

Brewster says Weber has an edge because of his experience, but also noted he was not going to alternate quarterbacks on certain situations like last season. The Gophers were six-and-seven in 2009, losing five of their last seven games when the offense had trouble scoring points. Weber and backup Marques Gray shared quarterback duties in the final part of last season. Brewster says he wants to have Gray on the field as much as possible in 2010. Also in the mix at quarterback is Moses Alipate who played prep football at Bloomington Jefferson.

Former U quarterback Cory Sauter is a candidate for the head coaching job at Southwest, Minn. State. The Mustangs need a new coach after Eric Eidsness resigned to become offensive coordinator at South Dakota State. Sauter was an All-State selection at Hutchinson High School before his college career with the Gophers, and is currently Southwest Minnesota State's interim head coach.
