MADISON - Wisconsin quarterback Curt Phillips could miss all of next season, after he tore the ACL ligament in his right knee in a scrimmage last Saturday.

Badgers’ coach Bret Bielema confirmed the injury yesterday. He said it’s possible that Phillips could return later in the year – but he says it’s uncertain, because every knee injury is a little bit different.

Phillips, who will be a sophomore this fall, is expected to undergo surgery in the next couple weeks. And he’ll most likely miss a year of eligibility. He cannot get a medical waiver for next season, after he red-shirted in 2008.

Meanwhile, Jon Budmayr takes Phillips’ place as the number-two quarterback behind Scott Tolzien. Budmayr will be a red-shirt freshman in the fall, and Bielema says he has a strong arm.
