Milwaukee Vincent will try to become the first girls’ high school basketball team to win four straight titles, as the state tournament begins today in Madison. The Division-One quarter-finals get underway this afternoon, and Vincent will try to win its 10th straight game in the tournament when it takes on Racine J.I. Case. Vincent is 94-7 in its last four seasons, and they’re the only returning champion from a year ago in the four divisions.
In today’s other Division-One quarter-finals, Verona plays Milwaukee Pius XI. De Pere faces Beaver Dam. And Middleton takes on Wausau West. The Division-Four semi-finals are first up this morning. Wausau Newman plays Weston at 9:05 a.m., followed by Black Hawk of South Wayne against unbeaten and top-ranked Minong Northwood. Semi-finals in Divisions 2 and 3 will be played tomorrow. All four title games are set for Saturday at the Kohl Center.
Nicole Griffin of Milwaukee Vincent has been named to Parade Magazine’s All-American girls’ high school third team. Coaches, scouts, and recruiters made the selections. And they’ll appear in Sunday’s edition of the magazine. Griffin is a 6-6 senior center for Vincent. She has averaged 17 points, eight rebounds, and three-and-a-half blocked shots a game this season. Earlier this month, Griffin was named the Gatorade Wisconsin girls’ player-of-the-year for the second straight time.
