Goodell says the NFL will set up divisional match-ups late in season
Regional Sports- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says the league will try to make teams play divisional opponents in the final week of the regular season. He says there’s a greater chance the games would mean something in the standings, and make it less likely that playoff teams will rest their starters in Week-17.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says the league will try to make teams play divisional opponents in the final week of the regular season. He says there’s a greater chance the games would mean something in the standings, and make it less likely that playoff teams will rest their starters in Week-17.
Goodell says the paying fans get cheated when teams treat the final regular season game like an exhibition, to keep players fresh for the post-season. He concedes having all divisional contests might not eliminate the issue, but it will help. Goodell says he’d like to see a lot of divisional games in Week-16, too.
But it won’t have a big impact on the Green Bay Packers. They’ve had divisional contests in both Weeks 16-and-17 in three-of-the-last-four years. And in 2007, coach Mike McCarthy kept six starters in street clothes when the Pack hosted Detroit in the final regular season game that year.
