PHOENIX - After a day off, the Milwaukee Brewers will play the Los Angeles Dodgers this afternoon in a spring training contest in Arizona. Right-hander Jeff Suppan and left-hander Manny Parra will both get some innings. They’re among four top candidates still competing for the final two spots in the rotation with just 11 days before the regular season opener.
Right-hander Dave Bush and southpaw Chris Narveson are the other hopefuls. Brewers’ manager Ken Macha says the team’s plans will be much more apparent by Monday – and some very tough decisions are coming up. Parra and Narveson are both out of minor league options. And if they’re placed on waivers, both are likely to be picked up by another team – which the Brewers don’t want to see happen.
Bush has minor league options, but he has enough Major League service time to refuse a demotion. The same is true for Suppan, and his 12-and-a-half million dollar salary for this year apparently makes a trade out of the question.
