Wisconsin Sports-- The Wisconsin men’s hockey team will play Vermont tonight in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in Saint Paul.
ST. PAUL - The Wisconsin men’s hockey team will play Vermont tonight in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in Saint Paul.
The Badgers have the top-seed among four teams in their regional, with a record of 25-10-4. They’ll play a number-four Vermont squad that’s 17-14-7.
Wisconsin is coming off a third-place showing in the WCHA playoffs. The Badgers are second in the nation in scoring with 3.97 goals per game – and they’re third in scoring margin at plus one-point-four-one. Wisconsin is 16-2-and-1 when it scores first. Vermont finished eighth among 10 teams in the Hockey East Conference. That’s the lowest finish for an at-large team in the national tournament’s 62-year history.
Senior Brayden Irwin leads the Catamounts with 15 goals and 34 points. Tonight’s winner will play either Saint Cloud State or Northern Michigan tomorrow night for a berth at the Frozen Four next month in Detroit.
