Wisconsin, St. Cloud State to play for Frozen Four berth tonight

Regional Sports
- The WCHA will at least have one team in the Frozen Four as Wisconsin and St. Cloud State will square off in the finals of the NCAA West Regional Saturday evening at 8 p.m. at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

ST. PAUL - The Wisconsin men's hockey team faces St. Cloud State for the chance to advance to the Frozen Four. Wisconsin beat Vermont 3-2 and St. Cloud State edged Northern Michigan 4-3 in double overtime in the NCAA West Regional in front over 7,000 fans.

All three Badger goals came on power plays. Vermont had scored twice in the first period to take a 2-1 lead, but the Catamounts were blanked the rest of the way by goalie Scott Gudmandson. Blake Geoffrion, Justin Schultz and Brian Davies scored goals for Wisconsin.

Wisconsin won the game in the second period, out-shooting Vermont 16-3 and scoring twice.

St. Cloud State won its first-ever NCAA tournament game in nine tries since it became a Division I program in 1988.

Tony Mosey scored the winning goal :23 seconds into the second overtime off assists from Jordan LeBlanc and Garrett Roe. The puck dribbled right past the Northern Michigan goalie Brian Stewart.

NMU was more than a match for SCSU for three periods but the Huskies dominated the first overtime period despite not getting a goal and came out strong again in the second overtime.

This will be the sixth time this season both UW and SCSU have played with SCSU having won three, including last week's 2-0 win in the WCHA Final Five. However, both of Wisconsin's wins came in Saturday night games. UW is looking for its first NCAA Frozen Four berth since 2006.
