New contract hasn't sunk in yet for Gallardo

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee Brewers’ starter Yovani Gallardo says the enormity of his new contract has still not sunk in – and it will give his young son a chance to pursue whatever he wants.
The 24-year-old Gallardo signed a five-year deal yesterday worth just over $30-million dollars. The team has a 13-million-dollar option for a sixth year, which Gallardo can reject if he gets at least two high finishes in the voting for the Cy Young award.
Assistant general manager Gord Ash said the Cy Young provision was a compromise in exchange for Gallardo giving up an extra year of free agency. The Brewers bought out all of Gallardo’s years for salary arbitration, plus his first year of free agent eligibility. The option would cover his second year.
General manager Doug Melvin said it’s great for a team to lock up players they draft and develop. Milwaukee drafted Gallardo in 2004, and he went 13-and-12 a year ago. The Brewers had to renew Gallardo’s contract for this season, after the two sides could not agree on a salary. He was given $450,000 dollars. That goes up to $500,000 this year, with a one-and-a-quarter million dollar signing bonus.
The Brewers were off yesterday. They’ll host Saint Louis in a weekend series that begins tonight.
