Lynx draft Virginia's Wright in first round

MINNEAPOLIS - The Lynx chose reigning Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year Monica Wright yesterday with the second overall pick in the WNBA Draft.

Wright was an all-American guard at Virginia and is expected to come off the bench in her first pro season. The Lynx also had the third overall selection and chose Nebraska forward Kelsey Griffin, who was promptly traded to Connecticut for a first-round and second-round pick in next year's draft.

First-year Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve says this was a good year to stockpile draft picks because the team doesn't need an incoming rookie to step in as a starter. The Lynx also chose Gabriella Marginean with the 26th overall pick. The former standout from Drexell is a long-shot to make the Lynx roster.

A couple of former Minnesota high school standouts were taken yesterday in the WNBA Draft.

Chosen with the number 14 overall pick by the Washington Mystics was Jenna Smith, who was Minnesota's Ms. Basketball and led Bloomington Kennedy to the 2005 Class Four-A state championship. Smith had an all-American college career at Illinois. Taken 25th overall by the New York Liberty was Cory Montgomery of Cannon Falls. Montgomery led the Bombers to the 2006 state title in Class Two-A and played college hoops at Nebraska.
