Brewers avoid getting swept in Wrigley

CHICAGO - Ryan Braun’s eighth-inning homer gave the Milwaukee Brewers an 8-6 win yesterday over the Cubs.
The Brewers avoided being swept for three games at Wrigley Field for the first time since 2004 – and it was Milwaukee’s second victory in its last six contests. Braun went 4-for-5 and he scored twice. Casey McGehee belted a two-run homer, drove in three on the day, and walked twice.
Jeff Suppan survived his first start of the year with a no-decision, giving up four runs in five innings. Carlos Villanueva did not give up a hit in two innings of relief, and he struck out four. Chris Narveson got the win to go 1-0. And Trevor Hoffman barely earned his 594th career save. He survived two bloop doubles lost in the sun in the ninth inning.
Jeff Samardzija took the loss, giving up single runs in the seventh-and-eighth to go 0-and-1. Marlon Byrd hit a two-run homer for the Cubs, and Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez both had solo shots.
All players wore Number-42 in honor of the 63rd anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball. The Brewers will open a weekend series in Washington tonight. Right-hander Yovani Gallardo faces Nationals’ left-hander John Lannan.
