STEVENS POINT - A plan to expand the Wisconsin high school basketball tournaments to five divisions has failed to clear its first big hurdle.

The Basketball Coaches Advisory Committee of the WIAA voted 5-3 against endorsing the idea. The Sports Advisory Committee will weigh in on the proposal June 24th – and then it goes to the WIAA’s Board of Control 10 days later for final action.

The coaches’ panel voted on a slightly different plan than what was proposed in January. Division-One would still have eight sectionals, but the quarter-finals would be played at various locations around the state instead of in Madison.
