WASHINGTON D.C. - The Milwaukee Brewers scored 10 runs in the first inning yesterday, and then hung on to beat the Nationals in Washington 11-7.

Counsell highlighted the rally with his third career grand slam, as Milwaukee sent 14 batters to the plate. It was the highest-scoring first frame in Brewer history, and it marked the fifth time in their 40-plus years that the Brewers scored 10 runs in an inning. The last time was against Arizona in 2001.

Counsell says Milwaukee might have blown its 10-run lead if it wasn’t for center-fielder Carlos Gomez throwing out Washington’s Ian Desmond at the plate in the seventh inning. The Nats scored twice in that frame to make it a four-run contest.

Nationals’ starter Jason Marquis gave up seven runs on four hits without recording an out. He also hit two batters, as his record fell to 0-and-3. Claudio Vargas got the win, giving up two runs in two relief innings. He’s now 1-and-0. Casey McGehee went 3-for-4 with an R-B-I and two runs scored.

And Jim Edmonds drove in a pair for Milwaukee, which salvaged a victory in each of their last three series while going 3-and-6.

Desmond and Ryan Zimmerman each had two RBI’s for Washington, which ended a three-game winning streak.

The Brewers are now 5-and-7 on the year, tied with the Chicago Cubs for third in the National League Central. The Brewers are off today, and will host Pittsburgh tomorrow night.
