MINNEAPOLIS - Former Saint Thomas Academy standout Ryan Walters has backed out of his commitment to play college hockey at the University of Minnesota.
Walters signed with the Gophers in 2007 and played two seasons of junior hockey for Des Moines, Iowa. He was set to join the Gophers this coming fall, but there was little room for him on the roster with Jay Barriball coming back from a knee injury that cost him all of last season.
Among the forwards coming in for the Gophers are reigning Minnesota Mister Hockey Nick Bjugstad of Blaine, who accelerated his high school studies to start college a year early.
The Gophers reportedly asked Walters to play one more season of junior hockey.
