Pirates help Brewers go back over .500 with 20-0 thumping

PITTSBURGH - The Milwaukee Brewers went back above .500 yesterday with a record-setting 20-0 victory at Pittsburgh.
It was the most lop-sided loss for the Pirates in their 124-year history. It tied the Brewers’ biggest margin of victory, after they had whipped Toronto 22-2 in 1992. And it was only the fifth time since 1900 that a team won a shutout by 20-or-more runs.
Prince Fielder got things started in the second inning with his first home run of the season. Ryan Braun went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and five RBI’s. Jim Edmonds had four hits, and fell a triple short of the cycle. The Brewers had 25 hits in all, the second-highest in team history.
Manager Ken Macha went to his bench after six innings, but the barrage continued. Pirates’ reliever Brendan Donnelly called the loss an embarrassment and said quote, “We should all be embarrassed to have Major League Baseball uniforms on our backs today.” Daniel McCutchen took the loss, giving up eight runs in three-and-two-thirds innings. Randy Wolf threw six scoreless innings for the win, improving to 2--1.
The Brewers swept the three-game series by a combined 36-1. Detroit was the last team to win a three-game set by 35 runs, out-scoring Minnesota 45-10 in 1993. The Brewers host the Pirates for three more games next week, but Wolf warned against being too over-confident. The Brewers will host the Chicago Cubs tonight. Right-hander Jeff Suppan faces Cubs’ right-hander Ryan Dempster.
