DETROIT - A controversial call opened the door for a six-run rally by the Detroit Tigers, who held on to beat the Twins 11-6 last night at Comerica Park.

The Twins were leading 6-5 in the sixth inning when the umpires ruled Twins center fielder Denard Span dropped a fly ball hit by Johnny Damon. Instead of two outs and one runner on base, the Tigers were given new life and scored six times to take the lead for good. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was ejected after arguing that Span caught the ball and dropped it trying to throw back to the infield.

The Twins had taken an early 6-1 lead on homers by Jim Thome and Luke Hughes, whose home run came in his first major league at-bat. But Scott Baker couldn't hold the lead while three Detroit relievers held the Twins to three harmless hits over the last five and one-third innings.
