Prince Fielder beat out an infield single with the bases loaded in the eighth inning Wednesday, to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 5-4 home win over St. Louis.
The Brewers ended a two-game losing streak, and they moved to within a game of the first-place Cardinals in the National League Central.
Mat Gamel hit a two-run homer for Milwaukee. Ryan Braun tripled and singled. And Craig Counsell went 2-4 with a walk and an RBI.
Counsell also scored the winning run in the eighth. Todd Coffey got the win in the relief, and is now 4-1.
Trevor Hoffman loaded the bases in the ninth, but he got Yadier Molina to ground into a force-out to secure his 19th save of the year.
Jason Motte took the loss, and is now 3-3. Molina doubled twice, scored once, and drove in a run as the Cards lost for only the second time in their last seven games.
Brewers’ bench coach Willie Randolph served a one-game suspension, after he left the dug-out to argue an umpire’s call on Tuesday night.
Only a manager can do that. The Brewers’ win was the second in their last seven games.
They’ll close out their series with the Cardinals this afternoon at Miller Park.
Left-hander Manny Parra will return from the minors to face Cards’ right-hander Joel Pineiro.
