Twins sweep Tigers, tighten control of AL Central

The Tigers threatened the Twins hold on first place in the AL Central before their series this week. But that's no longer true after the Twins completed the sweep Wednesday with a 5-4 win

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Twins completed a three-game sweep of Detroit with a 5-4 home victory.

Denard Span went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run-scored, as the Twins took a three-and-a-half game lead over the second-place Tigers in the American League Central Division.

Tigers right fielder Brennan Boesch couldn't hold on to a wind-blown fly ball hit by Nick Punto, which fell for a three-base error and opened the door for a pair of unearned runs. Rick Porcello took the loss.

Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila both hit two home runs for the Tigers, all with no one on base. Kevin Slowey pitched into the sixth inning for his fourth win and Jon Rauch picked up his eighth save in nine chances.
