BAY CITY--Laurie Andrews had been working in the non-profit world for years and was seeking a change.

“I absolutely love coffee and I always wanted to own my own business,” she said.

Andrews’ two wishes came together with Coffee By The Bay, an establishment specializing in coffee, collectibles and creative paper. The business opened last month at W6518 Hwy. 35 in Bay City.

The business also matches her personality.

“I’m a people person,” she said. “The worst time here is when no one is around. Not only because no sales are being made, but also there is no one to talk to.”

The connections she established over the years played a big role in the business’ launch. The building’s owner was a friend of hers and agreed to Andrews’ idea for a coffee shop. Her husband, Warner, and family friend, Duane Johnson, handled the renovations.

Another friend of hers was selling their espresso machine, which Andrews was more than willing to take off her hands. When she heard a scrapbook store in Red Wing was closing, she purchased most of their products as well.

The business’ main focus, she said, will be coffee. All regular espresso drinks will be sold, along with dairy or green tea smoothies. A limited menu is available, including soups, sandwiches and gourmet macaroni and cheese on Fridays and Saturdays. Coffee By The Bay will also sell bakery items from Hanisch Bakery in Red Wing.
