COLFAX - Elmwood-Plum City's boys' track and field team won its first-ever WIAA regional title Monday.
The Red Devils won the Division 3 Colfax Regional with 156 points, well ahead of Eau Claire Regis' 117.5 points. Spring Valley was third with 87 points.
E-PC will have a huge contingent at Thursday's sectional meet, also in Colfax. They will have 17 entries led by nine regional champions. The Red Devils were certainly glad to have Gabe Rodriquez back running. Coming off an injury that kept him out of the Dunn-St. Croix meet, Rodriguez won both the 200 (:24.41) and 400-meter (:52.28) runs. Teammate Alex Gilles was first in the 800-meter run (2:03.91), Lance Van Holtum in the long jump (18-10) , Tyler Churchill won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (:44.21), Nick Kernstock won the 110-meter high hurdles (:16.41). Tim Talford took first in the mile run and E-PC’s 1600 (3:35.97) and 3200-meter (8:33.21) relays teams were also winners.
The top four placewinners in the regional head onward to sectionals.
Spring Valley's will have 10 entries but they did not have a regional champion. Still it was the highest finish for SV in many, many years.
Valley's girls team did have champion. Katelyn Neck finished first in the high jump at 4-10. Teammate Aarynn Deutsch also made 4-10 but lost a tie-breaker to Neck to finish second. The Cardinals will have eight entries in Thursday's sectional.
SV's girls team also took third with 84 points while E_PC was fifth with 76. The host Vikings won the meet with 171 points. Elmwood-PC girls will have just seven entries at sectional but that list includes champs like Jordyn Mark in the triple jump (33-1) and Jenna Reitz in both the 100 (:13.35) and 200 (:27.83) meter dashes.
