Panther teams take second, Prescott teams place fourth
Both the Prescott and Ellsworth track and field teams had the same places for both boys and girls teams at Monday's WIAA Division 2 Amery Regional. Both squads had regional champions.
AMERY - Both the Prescott and Ellsworth track and field teams had the same places for boys and girls at Monday's WIAA Division 2 Amery Regional.
The Panther boys and girls were second and the Cardinal squads were both fourth. Somerset won the girls meet with 172 points and Osceola took the boys with 133 points. Top four individuals move on to sectionals.
But Ellsworth and Somerset's girls' teams will each send 19 entries to Thursday's sectional at Colby. There, with a bigger field, the Panthers, who scored 155 points hope to finally catch the Spartans.
EHS' girls had two regional champs, Lydia Kuhl in the 300-meter low hurdles in :49.18 seconds and Carlie Melstrom in the 200-meter dash in :27.24 seconds. PHS' Amy Carroll won the 400-meter crown in 1:02.08 while Victoria Simones once again won both the mile (5:39.82) and two-mile (12:24.75)runs.
It was the Ellsworth a surprising second with 93 points led by freshman Alex Campbell. He won the regional title in the high jump at six feet, the triple jump with a leap of 41-1 and helped power the Panthers' 1600-meter relay team to first place over MBC champ Prescott with a time of 3:34.50. Ellsworth will have one its largest contingents at sectionals in years with nine entries.
Prescott's boys team will have 10 entries at sectionals but their only regional champ was the 800-meter relay team with a time of 1:33.09.
