MIAMI - The Milwaukee Brewers scored five runs in the final two innings last night to win at Florida, 7-to-4. Carlos Gomez broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth with a run-scoring single that put the Brewers in front for good.

Yovani Gallardo won his sixth straight start, giving up two runs on four hits in seven innings. He improved to 6-and-2, and he hasn’t lost since April 10th. Gallardo also hit his sixth career homer – the most ever for a Brewer pitcher – with a solo shot. Prince Fielder homered in his second straight contest. And George Kottaras hit a two-run blast in the eighth, ending the Marlins’ streak of 22 games in which the bullpen did not give up a homer.

John Axford picked up his third save, despite giving up a run in one-and-two-thirds innings. Jorge Sosa took the loss in relief, giving up three runs in an inning-and-two-thirds. Jorge Cantu drove in two runs for Florida, which ended a three-game winning streak. Hanley Ramirez hit a run-scoring double to extend his hitting streak against the Brewers to 16 games.

Last night’s contest was delayed 51 minutes by rain. Milwaukee ended a three-game losing streak, and will go for a split of its four-game set with the Marlins tonight. Left-hander Chris Capuano will make his first start since September of 2007, after having his second Tommy John elbow surgery. Right-hander Josh Johnson will go for Florida.

The Brewers have agreed to sign reliever Brian Bruney to a minor league contract, once he passes a physical. The 28-year-old Bruney was recently cut by Washington after he refused a minor league assignment. He had control problems with the Nationals, giving up 20 walks and 21 hits in 17-and-two-thirds innings. Bruney had a 1-and-2 record with a seven-point-six-four ERA. He’s expected to report to Triple-“A” Nashville in a few days – and he can become a free agent if the Brewers don’t bring him up to the Majors by July first. Bruney had a three-point-nine-two ERA last year in 44 relief appearances with the New York Yankees.
