State track and field meet opens today in La Crosse
Wisconsin Sports-- Hundreds of athletes will go-for-the-gold when the WIAA state high school track-and-field meet opens today in La Crosse.
LA CROSSE - Hundreds of athletes will go-for-the-gold when the WIAA state high school track-and-field meet opens today in La Crosse at UW-La Crosse Veterans Memorial Stadium.
It’s the 115th annual meet – and for the first time, wheelchair competition will take place with a limited number of events in one division each for boys and girls.
Hartland Arrowhead, Wautoma, and Fennimore are the defending boys’ team champions in Divisions-One-Two-and-Three. Schofield D.C. Everest has the most qualifiers with 18. Seven individuals and seven relay teams are back to defend the boys’ championships they won a year ago. Tom Helstern of Shell Lake is going for his third straight crown in the 400-meters.
On the girls’ side, Milwaukee Bradley Tech is the defending Division-One champ. Arcadia is going for its third straight title in D-Two. And Wausau Newman is defending its Division-Three crown. Kimberly has the most girls’ qualifiers with 20. Twelve individuals and nine relay squads are back to defend their 2009 titles.
Maya Vazquez of Arcadia is competing for her fourth straight gold in the high jump. Bri Halama of Independence-Gilmanton is seeking her third consecutive triple-jump title. And Rachel Melum of Iola-Scandinavia will compete for her third high jump crown.
