Gophers go ten innings to beat New Mexico 6-4

- The University of Minnesota baseball team defeated New Mexico 6-4 in 10 innings Saturday and played its was to the regional final in the NCAA Division I tournament.

FULLERTON, Calf. - The University of Minnesota baseball team defeated New Mexico 6-4 in 10 innings Saturday and played its was to the regional final in the NCAA Division I tournament.

The Gophers got four hits in the top of the 10th to take the lead.

Minnesota trailed the Lobos 3-0 until catcher Kyle Knutson hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. He also survived a collision at home plate with UNM's Justin Howard which injured Howard and took one of the nation's top hitters out of the ballgame.

Michael Kvasnicka doubled for the U to tie the game. Minnesota closer Scott Matays struck out eight New Mexico batters in the late innings to get the win.

Regional host Cal-State Fullerton beat Stanford to stay alive in the tournament. They play New Mexico Sunday afternoon. The winner takes on the Gophers this evening, 10 p.m. CST. If Minnesota wins they win the regional. If not, they will play again Monday for the championship.
